Veterinary Assistant

Newtown, PA Full-Time Opening Fall/Winter 2026

Friends Veterinary Specialty and Emergency is seeking compassionate, skilled veterinary assistants to join our growing team. We are a 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital in Bucks County, privately owned by local veterinarians, and we are searching for highly motivated veterinary team members.

At Friends VSE, we recognize the essential role veterinary assistants play in delivering exceptional patient care. We are seeking compassionate, motivated veterinary assistants to support our specialty and emergency teams. In this role, you will be an essential part of the care team, helping ensure pets receive exceptional medical attention and comfort during their visits.

We welcome all motivated assistants, whether you are just starting out or have previous experience. You’ll work closely with our CSRs, nurses (CVT/VTS), ER veterinarians and board-certified specialists, gaining valuable skills and experience in a supportive, team-oriented environment while making a real difference in pets’ lives.

Compensation: Starting at $17/h

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide attentive care for hospitalized patients, including monitoring comfort and behavior, administering medications as directed by veterinary staff, and assisting with feeding and basic patient care needs
  • Walk canine patients and maintain feline litter boxes to support patient hygiene, comfort, and recovery during hospitalization
  • Maintain hospital medical supplies by restocking treatment areas, cleaning and organizing medical equipment, and ensuring necessary supplies are readily available for triage, emergency procedures, and daily patient care
  • Prepare, clean, and maintain treatment areas, exam rooms, and kennel spaces to ensure a safe, sanitary, and organized hospital environment
  • Perform routine laundry duties including washing bedding, towels, and patient care materials to help maintain a clean and comfortable environment for hospitalized animals
  • Assist veterinary staff with safe and effective patient handling for examinations, diagnostic procedures, blood collection, and imaging studies
  • Assist with diagnostic testing by running laboratory samples and supporting imaging procedures as directed by the veterinary team
  • Communicate effectively with veterinarians, nursing staff, and clients to ensure accurate information sharing and continuity of patient care
  • Demonstrate initiative and commitment to professional growth through active pursuit of new knowledge, skills, and training opportunities within the hospital
  • Assist with client communication

Requirements

Education & Credentials

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education in animal husbandry or veterinary-related fields preferred
  • Previous experience in pet care or veterinary hospital/clinic settings is preferred, but not required
  • References may be required

Skills & Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of veterinary terminology and hospital procedures is preferred, but not required
  • Ability to handle patients of all sizes and temperaments with low stress handling techniques
  • Basic computer proficiency and the ability to learn and use practice management software, electronic medical records, and team collaboration platforms
  • Understand animal language/indicators of stress
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • The ability to kneel and work at floor level for the larger patients
  • The ability to lift patients independently (up to 40 pounds) and assist with lifting larger patients when necessary
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as required in a 24/7 hospital setting
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced specialty and emergency setting
  • Actively seek and incorporate feedback to improve performance
